A resident of Salt Spring Island, B.C., Antony Marius Marcano was born
in 1959. His formative years were spent in the hardwood forest country
of the Rideau River Valley in Eastern Ontario. This, coupled with a rich
family tradition of professional artists spanning three generations,
instilled a deep affinity for both art and nature.
His early work was primarily two-dimensional, including a proficiency
with pen and ink, a technique which played a key role in the careers of
both his grandfather, Bert Sharkey, and his mother,
J. Sharkey Thomas.
A turning point in 1981, with the impulsive purchase of an antiquated
casting machine, brought about a complete shift from graphics to
sculpture.
Largely self-taught in the technical aspects of metallurgy, years of
research and experimentation have refined the skills with which the
artist creates and personally reproduces each of his subjects in silver,
pewter or bronze.
